Next thing to be thinking about now as I'm preparing to clear the engine bay is the electrics.

As I'm running carbs I know I need the ignition controller module for the dizzy, plus all the obvious electrical (lights, various sensor connected back to the dash / fuse box etc). I'm probably going to remove the dash so I can tidy up the electrics by pulling it all back in through the bulkhead, plus there's a old alarm system I want to get rid of which has the control unit tucked away behind the dash.

My main question is can I bin completely the ECU?? Does any of the required electricals run through the ECU??? Thanks J

More tidying up, battery will now definitely be going in the boot, it will be a top fill rad with no expansion tank

Update 16th March

Dash out . . . . . found an old alarm system and miles of crap from the existing one (which the insurance company will not accept 'cause it was installed ages ago, top Thatcham  rating a the time, however now it just a waste of time so that's coming out.

Plenty to do . . . . .

Update 1st April

Shopping list growing fast, scuttle removed so some fabrication to tidy up and fix the rot around the clutch cable hole and some minor rot along the seam of the scuttle.

New wishbones arrived and all the front end to come off this weekend. The old alarm system removed and much of the old wiring loom binned, now all pulled back in the car to be sorted later. Dash off and presently fighting with the shear bolts on the column so I can remove the pedal box for the bias balance box.

Lots of cleaning, priming and painting to come, anti roll bars, bushes, shocks on order.

Bay looking like it's nearly ready . . .

Update 5th April

All of the front suspension dropped out, pretty simple when there's no engine there :-) Top tip, whack the top of the control rod ball joints with a lump hammer before you turn the crown nut round and then give it a whack from underneath both popped out in one.

First degrease and jet wash, not looking too shabby for a car with 200,000 on the clock, breaking down the suspension and in the bay with the grinder for some more tidying up and begin the prep for spraying;

Update 12th April

Another good day, rear axle off, block back from Gosnays, head off to JM for porting. Brake Bias Box on it's way from HRCP, rear spring broken so able to justify the cost of Gaz coilover to Mrs G as a safety issue. Rear axle stripped and cleaned and part painted. Discovered the previous owner had put 280mm vented disks on the front so going to leave the brakes alone (braided hoses though and decent pads, maybe uprate the cylinders at the rear).

Can feel the turn point approaching when I can start building back up. Gotta get under the car tomorrow first though for the shittiest job of all cleaning and prep the underside.

Still thankfully I've installed the hover engine for this job;

Update 19th April

Rear beam sorted with new ARB fitted. Need to get an original VW rear loop clamp, the piece of **** Quiffs repro ones don't fit, particularly with the uprated ARB, too narrow at the top which pinches in the bush. Old original one, straight on.

Steering rack all re conditioned and ready with poly bushes. Waiting for the Gaz coilovers to arrive.

Update 4th May

Guess I'm making progress the bay before / now - first coat of primer, first time spraying with a compressor, better than I expected if I don't say so myself ;-)

Before

Now

What are you spraying - 2K primer? I hope it doesn't need as much flatting as the high build stuff I've been using lately - that would be a pain in the butt to rub down in a bay. It's character building though ;)

Yep 2k primer, finish pretty dam good to be honest. My first attempt at spraying and happy with the results. Think i'll be leaving the exterior to the experts though!

Looks good. You did flat it down to give the topcoat a key though, right?

Solid white is about the easiest colour to spray… going by the finish on the bay you could well have a go at it… all depends whether you want it to look presentable or perfect really.

Yep, rubbed down plus did a but of extra filling to smooth out a couple of areas, however the car is not Alpine White so glad I didn't start with the boot (which as some scab rust)! ;

Still onwards and upwards  ;D
