Sam Fish Mk1 Race Car
« on: July 01, 2012, 05:03:07 pm »
I am using the JMR gear linkage on my race car. It is a really great piece of engineering, and such a treat to use.

I am also nagging Jason for some Top mounts that he is developing.... looking forward to giving them some abuse as soon as they are ready Jason!

He also has a race head of mine that came with the car. The idea is for JMR to check it over and see if there is any room for improvement. The current engine is doing just fine for now, so I do not want to tamper with it too much, although when it does need bits, I will turn to JMR of course.

I haven't had a chance to use the car yet this year, but I will do soon hopefully. I do not think I will be able to do the next round of the VAG Trophy at Oulton now becasue of a date clash, but I will be at the Brands Prept meet on the 25th July where there is some track time booked.

I am just putting a centre console together and sorting the wiring.....

I have a blog that I try to keep up to date:

Hey Jason.

Thanks!
My brother is an electronic engineer, so I have asked him to come and help this weekend with the wiring - new fuse box etc.
The thought of breaking down due to a stray wire would be very annoying, so best to sort it out.

Yeah, I said to Nick (and others!) I would 100% be at Oulton  :-[
It's just clashing dates with other things, money etc etc.
I cant believe the first race for me this year could be the 15th Sept at brands GP. Rubbish!

You should add some pictures of your car!

Would be good to see you and Nick on track, and meet you in person! ...clashing with a clio/mini meet?

Brands GP...I'll try my best to make that!...great circuit!

If you where closer I would offer to do any paintwork for you, on the cheap.
Is yours 175bhp at the wheels, or something?? Would be great to get some on-board videos, I bet it sounds great!

I work in a team for an artists and 2 big projects are just coming to an end (Royal opera house and National gallery), so he is having a massive party..... they are not your normal 'work-do's'.
Massive shame it has fallen on the same days.

Also, not sure if the car will be ready... Im trying hard.
We'll see, if I can get the car ready and I have the entry fees, I may not be able to resist!

Otherwise, why don't we organise a JMR trackday? I'll put it in the ideas section  ;D

Thanks Sam  ;D

I may cheat with the bodywork by getting it wrapped...my sticker man is brilliant at it!...or we have a friend with a bodyshop about 30 miles north of us...he's a Mk1 Golf man too!

175...I wish!....I have to make do with a puny 164 at the wheels! ...lol!...the up-coming re vamp may drag a couple more horses from it.

Im liking yr idea...I've been thinking of something like it for a while...I'll head over to the ideas section!

So I got a race in this year!
Brands GP at the weekend. Nick Penfold was also out in his Mk1. And Rob Fardon was out in his Mk1, in the saloon race - full or everything! 40+ cars on track!
There where 28 or so in the VAG Trophy. Brands GP is a bloody great track, and really good for racing on.

My car is going really well. I separated the airflow from the rad and airbox finally, so I guess that made a bit of a difference. I really need a diff now though. And I need to loose some weight from the car - which could be something nice to tinker with over the winter... not that I ever have time. I came in at 920kg with some spare fuel, and me inside.
I had a good hard race with a few different cars, fairly close at times.

My Doors are totally standard, and weigh as much as a horse. So they will be chopped about a bit. I HATE sliders in plastic windows, but I may be tempted to go down that route to save a bit more weight.
The tailgate will get its' plastic window fitted, and will also see a session with the angle grinder.

Not sure what to do with the bonnet. I guess I need a fibreglass one, but that is more money I would rather spend on tracktime, or a DIFF!

Other than that, I may swap some steel bits for aluminium here and there.... and removed the spare harness eyelets from the interior. Not sure how much the wing mirrors weigh?? I could swap them with a couple of carbon ones I have.

The main weight is in the bigger brakes, and the bigger wheels. Mine are not too bad for 15x7's, but it would weigh alot less with P-slots and the smaller tyres!

I left the steel bumper support behind the plastic, as i thought it would help if I had a little bump here and there. Glad I did in the end, as i gave somebody a bit of a nudge mid corner. They didn't go sideways, just forward. Not sure what it would have looked like with some lightweight aluminium bumper supports.... so I may go against convention and leave the steel lump there for now.

The list goes on!

With hooligan driving you want girders not bumpers! ...lol!

So about this weight...around 840 without you then?

Mk1's with a cage and fairly stripped are around 780 with glass still. I saved 8 kilos with a fibreglass bonnet so worth the effort. Lighten the std tailgate. .a fibreglass one is only 1.5 kilos lighter...the weight is in the glass...6 kilos worth!

Door glass is something like 5 kilos each and the rear 1/4's about 4 each. Obviously putting perspex back will add weight but I think the saving is around 12-14 kilos. .worth doing for sure. You could have a swinging port hole instead of sliders. .Im with you on that!

7x15 dynamics wheels are about 7-7.5 kilos. .bet the beemer rims are more!...unsprung and rotating mass there.

Then of course there's more power to come... 8)

Ha. Yeah, I may leave the girder there!

Yeah, I need to get to 840 with driver (I am 80kg I think). Or 890 if I fit a LSD.
The BMW wheels are 7.8'ish when I weighed them, so not much more than the Team Dynamics surprisingly.
Maybe worth going for a lighter bonnet then.

I need to be able to wave out of the drivers window if I understand the blue book correctly (must be to allow rude gesturing if somebody hits me), so sliders or winders are the only way - on my side at least.
Rotating porthole on the passengers side though :)

Cheers Jason.
Racing = No food on the table at the moment. So that is me done for this year I reckon.

Nick and Rob are both up for a trackday sometime before next season, could be March time for me. Would be good to get a bunch of competition Mk1's together for a magazine.

Working toward the latter... ;)

What's Rob's spec...same as yours?

Hmm...maybe leave the glass & regulator in the drivers window...I must admit I like to be able to open a window a crack or however much I want...I'll just make your head a little better to make up for the weight!

810 + you should be about right.

Not sure what robs spec is. It is ex-slick 50 too, so it must be similar.

Me, Nick and Rob are all racing ex-slick 50 cars. There is a magazine article there somewhere  ;)

Hope that head isn't in the way Jason :)

I found a couple of pictures on Flickr recently. Nick told me they where there. So thanks Nick, and thanks Cole Trickle: http://www.flickr.com/photos/coletrickle46/collections/

This is one from 2011:

Race one, lap 2 or 3 I think. The beetle ans Seat started near the back I think.

Pushing hard the next time around:

This was 1st lap of race 2... onto the back straight. I was nailed down the inside (starting the corner before), which is 'game over' onto the back straight on that particular corner.

Then finally got past this one, after a bump. I haven't missed the apex, it is just a very late one to get the best onto the long straight after. Maybe I could take a tighter line in and defend better without compromising the straight if I had a diff......:

And a random couple:

Me, running late for the collecting area.

My favourite:

There we go. My seasons racing. Haha.

No the heads not in the way...lol...actually I feel quite bad about it now... :-\...I'll give it a once over fairly soon...a good excuse for some bigger JMR logos on a certain blue Mk1 for next year...

Ha. It is no problem at all! I don't have any use for it over the winter really. No rush :)

I really need to open my engine up to see what is inside. Hopefully that head will be some bolt-on power for next year.... if it is not ****!
Sent a couple of messages to Tony.B and spoke about my chassis. There is some time to be made there too.

There are about 16'ish championship sponsors for the VAG, to help pay for the TV, but I am sure we can find space on there! I might have to turn it into a van and use the window space.

Sounds good!

I'd say a daylight reduction under the sills would help a treat...yes yes you need some mounts!...lol...I'm on the chase again!

There will be another MK1 with some chassis tweeks keeping you company next year too... ;D

Get the engine apart Sam...do a basic compression test first & check the cam timing via lift @ tdc...oh and the ignition / fueling on some rollers to get a current power output would help.
