Tim Moll's Red Mk1 trackcar - SOLD
« on: June 27, 2012, 08:37:30 pm »
I wasn't sure whether to post this in the members section or customers cars.....but seeing as Jason sorted the head that I have fitted to the engine I decided it should go in here  ;)

When I got the car last year it was someones unfinished project....I could see potential in it straight away as the shell was one of most solid Mk1 shells I had seen in a long time. Here are a few pics of what it was like when I got it....

It was polybushed all round and already had coilovers fitted, albeit not correctly or with correct spring rates....but that's a different story!

The engine fitted would have started life as a DX but has been bored out to 83mm with special autothermic pistons fitted, coincidentally Jason is now I believe about to offer these pistons, taking it up to 1900cc  ;)  It came with a Stage 1 ported hydraulic head and Piper fast road cam but the engine was running like a pig and as it wasn't road legal I never got to see what it went like  :(

My first decision was to fit the Stage 3 big valve mechanical head with Kent GS3 cam I had in my parts hoard, but before this was to be fitted I decided to ship it down to Jason for a bit of a re-fresh....good thing I did because despite only having done one trackday on my old engine and one rolling road session since I bought it from another 'reputable' tuner Jason informed me the head had done considerably more and was a real 'lemon' .....the guides were shot to pieces, the stem seals were knackered, the vlave clearances were all over the place and the top hat shims were jammed into the valve spring retainers rather than acting on the end of the stem of the valve  :o  It was lucky the thing hadn't self destructed to be honest, add to this the fact that the valve seats had been cut so deep that the valves were in effect completely shrouded....to say I was angry would be an understatement!  Jason told me not to panic and that while none of the above was ideal he could salvage it and make it what I had orignally paid for....I've got to admit I was sceptical as to me it sounded like it was only good for one thing....ramming it where the sun don't shine on the guy I bought it from lol

Fair play to Jason though because he did exactly what he promised and after I had buretted the cc of the pistons and given him the deck height he calculated how much needed to come out of the head in order to make the most out of the 300deg cam....and yes you guessed it that wasn't originally right either   >:(

Not only did Jason ship me back a head fit for purpose, but it was followed up with aftersales help and advice second to none...in fact he was almost keener than me for it to be up and running  :D

While the head was down with Jase I shipped the car off to a friends bodyshop to get that all sorted....it came back like this.....

I won't bore you with the rest of the hanging of bits on...just the important engine stuff  ;)

I fitted the head (Jason had already shimmed the cam before sending it back), wrapped the 4-2-1 Magnex manifold, set the cam timing and it fired up pretty much first time  ;D

I've made some subsequent tweaks, such as fitting a 1600 air metering head, relocating the battery so that I could shield the airbox from the engine bay and get a decent cold air feed fitted along with a 16v WUR, altering the dizzy advance curve (again to Jason's recomended settings)

The result of all the work was that the engine produces 155bhp at 6800rpm and certainly puts a huge smile on my face  ;D  I popped my 1/4 mile sprint 'cherry' last weekend at Inters, posting a 6.78sec 0-60 and 1/4 mile in 15.14secs.  Not bad for a first effort and I have no doubt that with better traction (less loud pedal from me lol) the car would be sub 6.5sec and well in to the 14s.

Here's what the car looks like in finished fettle......

And here's a video of it in action last Saturday at Mallory Park where we managed to lap in sub 57secs  :o

I can not thank Jason and JMR enough for all their help and advice.....just to show my commitment to them and their abilities they are already building the engine for my next project....but more about that on another thread....

Cheers,

Tim

Blimey Tim, what a track car! Sounds lush and goes like mad :) really enjoyed the battle you had with the mini. Were you running 888's?

So it's been a while since I last updated the thread.......following Mallory and Inters I found that the rear crank seal was leaking a bit, luckily it was not bad enough to have contaminated the clutch plate

So off the gearbox, clutch and flywheel came only to find that it appeared the leak was not actually from the seal itself but instead some muppet had fitted the wrong gasket to the oil seal housing [:s]  I honestly have no idea what it was off but it certainly wasn't the right one for this engine!  Anyway as I had a new seal I decided it would be silly not to change it as well as the gasket as I had everything apart.   I also took the oppportunity to replace all the gearbox oil seals while the box was off (pushrod seal, input shaft seal, driveflange seals and caps)

With this done the clutch and gearbox were refitted, but while I was under there I decided to replace the standard gear linkage with a kit I got off Smudge a while ago....so this little lot was duly fitted

I also thought I'd change the bushes on the other parts of the linkage and imagine my surprise when I cleaned up one the main pivot arm to find it was in fact a Neuspeed part :o....

As people had been so quick to point out that my steering wheel was not straight after the video I posted of Mallory I thought I'd straighten this as well lol  While fiddling with bits in the car I got the under dash roll cage bar in as well :)

Whilst I was in a fettling mood I decided to take the hot air gun to the cars plastic trim to get rid of the faded gray look, I then treated it all to a coat of bumper restoring treatment and have got to say I was impressed with the overall result

Before........

After........

Then it was time for a fluid check, a good wash and coat of polish before loading it on the trailer ready to head down to Nick Penfold's house in preparation for Castle Combe on the Monday

13/8/12 Castle Combe Trackday

After a great BBQ and a few beers on Sunday evening, we woke up nice and early Monday morning and made the short drive from Nick's to Castle Combe Circuit, we were hopeful of a few dry runs before the forecast rain but only managed to get one decent dry run in unfortunately, it was the first time I'd driven Combe so it was nice for me to get a feel for it before the rain ;)

They said during the briefing that they weren't going to bother with the red and yellow flag as the circuit would be VERY slippery when the rain hit as they had a lot of activity on the circuit the previous week.....they were not kidding! lol

Jason (Mr Hillclimber) made the two hour drive up from the SW to check out what was going on and to have a drive in both Nick and my cars.....

Thanks for the comments at the end of this video Jason, I felt the car is pretty much there but always nice to get someone elses opinion

As some of you may have spotted on the JMR blog thread the car is very shortly going to be going up for sale, just going to get it MOT'd in the next week or so in order for it to be truly road legal......having said this I'm not going to lie I don't think it'd make anybody a godd daily as I don't feel it'll be that useable on the road due to the 300deg cam fitted which K jet really doesn't like at low engine and road speeds.  Having said this if it were fitted with carbs or ITBs and SEM it would be very drivable even at low speeds not to mention the :D factor......lol

So if anybody is interested in it before I actually get round to doing the For Sale ad then drop me a PM.

Tim

Well the next build is actually already under way, it's been over 10years in the planning...well I got the shell over 10yrs ago anyway  ;D

I bought the shell as a bare stripped out straight Campaign shell and it has been in storage ever since...unfortunately when the guy doing the bodywork made a start on it earlier in the year we soon found out that the years in storage had taken their toll  :'(  It was sent off to have the engine bay and interior floor pan sand blasted that revealed some extensive tin worm inside, so bad in fact that the decisions was made to replace the complete floor pan on both sides of the car   :o  Other bodywork changes include removal of steel roof and sunroof and fitting of a carbon jobbie I got a few years back, fibreglass, doors, wings, bonnet and tailgate, Perspex windows all round and heated clear front screen....oh yeah and a Berg cup arch kit to boot  :D

Car will be fitted with a OMP cage with additional strentghening to front turrets, Gaz coilovers, Eibach ARBs.  seats are Sparco light weight carbon jobbies and 5pt harnesses will also be used.  Dash is a Stack ST8100.  Steering via a Quaife quickrack and braking will be via a HRP bias pedal box.

Brakes wise....fronts will be Wilwood 4-pot dynalites on yet to be decided disc diameter, rears will be seat Cupra R rear disc setup.

As for powertrain......staying with 8v but moving to a 2ltr with new internals....oh yeah and the 8v head will be a xflow that Jason and I have been cooking up all year running on twin Jenvey 45s with a custom JMR inlet manifold and cam all controlled by a Emerald K3 ECU.  Gerabox is a 02K gearbox using std 02K 1st & 2nd, 8v GTI 020 3rd & 4th and 16v 020 5th on a 4.25:1 FD and Quaife LSD.

All the above ha=s already been procured and is either with the shell in Gloucestershire, with Jason down at JMR or under the spare bed at home!  ;D

Quite a few bits still to do and get but the majority of it is in hand, gonna need to get some cars gone to fund the final push to completion......I guess this really deserves it's own build thread so will try and get one started when I have some spare time  ;)

That sounds sweet! Looking forward to seeing the results on the x-flow. That car should be properly light too!

Yep it'll be light alright and with 200bhp which is the target for the initial build it'll be bloody quick as well  ;)

I say initial build because there will be a further development head wise which will follow....the initial head will be running Supertech 40mm inlets and 33mm exhausts which are the biggest that will fit on the standard xflow valve seats.....the other head is going to have 42mm inlets and 35mm exhausts, but clearly this will need new seats and some additional porting work.  So far on the initial head development Jason has got 100cfm flow on the 40mm valve so things are looking good  ;D

Re: Tim Moll's Red Mk1 trackcar - FOR SALE
« Reply #14 on: April 23, 2013, 12:43:47 pm »
So not updated this thread for a while as haven't really done that much over the winter months....

I decided a while ago that I would be selling the car to fund the new trackcar....more details to follow in due course....but before getting it up for sale I wanted to get it fully road legal so that any potential buyer would have the option to drive it to trackdays rather than have to trailer it, thus opening up the possible market!

To be fair having re-built the car from the ground up I knew that there was nothing wrong structurally or mechanically that would cause an issue as I have tested on-track extensively  ;)

The only things I needed to sort before taking it were some rear number plate lights, as previous owner had welded plates in where lights should be, this was easy to fix with a couple of LED lights mounted under the lip.  The only other issue I knew about was the horn didn't work, again a nice easy fix as it was just some dodgy wiring that has now been sorted!

So I just had a call to say it flew through, only thing that needed doing was to adjust the headlight aim  ;D

Next up is get it taxed and then I might run it about with some for sale signs in the window while I get the wheels on my roadcar re-furb'd which they are desperate for as I keep getting rim leaks as they are internally corroded  :(

So if anyone is on the lookout for a fully road legal trackcar then drop me a line  ;)
