Cooling problem of a different kind....
« on: July 30, 2014, 10:40:01 pm »
Opinions and advice sought folks. Dad uses a Fiat 131 Abarth for historic rallying , 2.0 16v , twin downdraught IDFs , Guy Croft rebuilt motor about 200 bhp . All has been running fine til the other week , in Rallye Eifel in Germany . When queuing for the start , or similar , it started running bad , and spluttering etc .. took ages to get going right , had to be left cool. A new coil was tried , no difference . Water and oil temps were as normal , water around 80 degrees. Anyways , long story shortened , when trying to figure it out , Dad noticed the inlet mani was bloody hot , too hot to leave his hand on . We're thinking the fuel wa boiling? He removed the ITG foamie air filter , and just wrapped a bit of mesh around the trumpets and that helped .

The car hasn't had any changes in the last few years , and has ran in the same spec in hotter ambient temps , with no problems . Fuel is 98-100 German pump fuel , which is what the car is set up for .

Any ideas folks ? And any ideas how to fix it?

Sounds feasible. I would try and heat insulate the inlet with a phenolic gasket for head mateing surface, and maybe ceramic coat it? Cam coat in Warrington can help if u tell them issue. Try cool it down.

Have you asked Guy for his suggestions out of interest?

@tim , yes , we did indeed . He didn't think the phenolic gasket would do a lot , strange IMo , I thought they were a good idea.

I suppose what's annoying is that it hasn't happened before , in hotter conditions! Could the fuel be boiling lower than before? possibly due to some additives for emissions or E5 or whatever?

@Rob , I suggested the likes of CamCoat , but on the exh mani , to reduce the underbonnet temps . How much difference did you notice when you tried it first?
There's a powder coater locally that does a "chrome" effect PC , I was thinking that on the inlet mani might help reflect away heat .
Dad is thinking of a duct out to the grille , too.

LOL now that sounds about right for Guy...if he hasn't tried it or recommended it then it isn't right  ::)  Guy and I have a bit of history....probably best you never mention my name lol

Back to the topic in hand.....the phenolic gasket is definitely not a bad thing IMO although if the cause of the issue is not heat tranferal from the cylinder head then it'll make no significant difference.

I would initially go back to basics as this is a condition that has suddenly occurred......if still running a dizzy check ign timing as from recollection the dizzy can work loose and a change in timing (retarded) would certainly cause the symptoms described.

Has anything else been changed before the event?  Plugs for example?  Typically Guy use to spec plugs one grade cooler on his high output engines, using a std grade plug if you have a concern with fuel would also cause some problems in higher ambients.

I have personally never been a huge fan of foam type air filter elements and I know for a fact that Jason isn't either!

Wish I could be of more assistance.

Tim
