Camshaft difference oem w or oem g
« on: March 01, 2014, 09:18:06 am »
Hi all,

I got a oem 8v camshaft, and it has a W stamped into it. Does anybody know what engine code it Original belongs to?

Some people telling me that a oem g cam is much better, and the best. With dont having some durations and liftt specificationsof both cams, i wont believe them.. I thought that both cams are 1800 mechanical gti cams.

The cam is going into a engine where we are onley allowed to use Original vw parts.. regulations..

looking forward to some feedback 8)

in my memory ,the " g" is a 235 ° for 1781 cm engine .
the w is for a 1600 if i believe my souvenirs  and less duration.

W is a 1600 gti cam or a carb? Does anyone has cam specs of these cams? I got the ev mechanical cam spec, believe its 227 degree and 10,9mm lift

It was a while ago, but I think all the 1800 8v injection cams I've measured (DX, EV, PB) were around 10.2mm lift. I've read that the EV and DX are longer duration than PB, but never had the kit to measure it. Modern cams are likely to have more lift but less duration/overlap, for emissions.

If anything I'd have thought that a 1600 GTI (EG) cam would be lumpier, if anything, but it's only a guess based on the relative power outputs.

EDIT: another thought. The cams I measured were Hydraulic ones. I don't know if the solid lifter cams would have the same max lift, or be slightly different.

I have doubts about this before. I have read this content, I lost it.
