Do you ever get pangs for cars you used to own?
« on: November 09, 2013, 09:39:51 am »
Recently I've had the old rose-tinted specs on & have been thinking back to my early VW days.

It has got me thinking about looking for a really tidy run-out 8v mk2.

Something about the reliability/instant power (ish) with digifant!, decent economy & fun chassis is tempting me

With an imminent house purchase it's something of a pipe dream for a while- but never say never

280's, nice exhaust, K&N panel filter....hmm quaife diff, schrick cam. Where would I stop??

Maybe it would feel slow after a decent 2L 8v & various 16v's but somehow I don't think I'd be disappointed. There is something satisfying about how an 8v drives.

I always remember how well my old 2L 8v mk2 used to go @ GTi International. Low 7 secs 0-60 & 15.5 1/4 with no slip diff. Used to upset all sorts! They were the days!!

Does anyone else ever get rose-tinted specs syndrome?

Chris

My 2.0l 8v was a real blast to drive on the road, I loved that car and would one similar in the future, nice to reflect on the good times with it.

A good mk2 certainly fetches strong money now  :o Still, they are of that age where good'uns are getting hard to source

The specialist places are charging a fortune for original unmolested examples!

Saying that, when I bought my last valver I went to look at one offered by Volkscars in Kidderminster. Looked shiny & lots of back to black applied, but couldn't mask the fact it had been a Cat D write off.

The trader got funny with me when I was hesitant so that was that.

All that glitters is not gold eh?

I still really miss my Mk2 16v turbo, the original Stealth Racing conversion based on the TurboTechnics kit. It was great fun.

Yes - sometimes my black 3dr Mk2 16vg60. Spend a while having it all perfect.

One night at speed changing into 5th I hit 3rd and made 5 thousand pieces of the charger.
Had only 600miles done since the build.
Toyed with going turbo after - but hate turbos so I sold the lot off 2 weeks after charger blew.

Why I didnt just buy another charger and rock on Ill never know, but I was just sick to the teeth of it all and had woman trouble at the time also.

Sold it to a great guy that loved it and fitted a new charger so that eased the rails a bit when thinking about it again - he still has it 6? yrs later.

Yes they are a labour of love Brian.

I decided to sell my old ITB'd mk2 16v after a hugely troublesome weekend at the Nordschleife in 2006.

Ran like crap all weekend then shed its alternator & pas pumps en route back to blighty. A happy boy I was not. Still miss that car too....

New owner totalled it (& very nearly himself) after 6 weeks of ownership

Aye . .. my new in `91` Mk2 16v GTI and then 80k fantastic miles, a never to be repeated experience   ;D

`98` ITR ... incredible machine  ;D ;D

Paying £16k for the `91`16v seems crazy now, not then thank goodness but paying the equivalent £30k today for the Mk7 is not so appealing  ???
