Steel thickness for DIY transmission tunnel ?
« on: October 26, 2013, 05:46:31 pm »
I may have to make a raised transmission tunnel on my MK2 golf over the winter.

I'm just wondering what thickness people recommend ? 0.8mm, 1mm or 1.2mm ?

It'll be a single piece, vertical sides, 45degree bend, short piece then another 45 degree to make the horizontal top, repeated on the other side of the transmission tunnel

I'd go for 1.2mm.

1.2mm sounds like a good choice, what thickness metal will it be welded too?

It'll be welded to the existing floor, where I've cut out the original tunnel. Don't know that thickness.

It's probably only going to be the first 300mm or so to help with exhaust clearance between the steering rack and bulkhead/tunnel.

Shouldnt be necessary. Fit a expansion 'slip' joint under where the shifter us so the exhaust can grow in length when its get hot, mine has marks suggesting ad much as an inch movement! Then the manifold doesnt bend and foul the tunnel/ rack when hot.

Rob, I'll be running a 3" system, so it's going to be pretty tight. If modifying the front of the tunnel gives me a smoother radius and more clearance, I'll do it. It's not as if it's a big job.

I have 2 sets of 48mm secondaries going through there so even a 3" should be ok, but it depends on the angle

I would try and keep the floor and the new metal the same thickness for welding purposes. The floor might be thinner than 1.2mm thinking about it.

Most O.E. panelwork is 0.8mm I thought....?
1.2 is fairly heavy, you may be able to get away with 1mm if you add some extra ridges and bends?

Nige, I run a 3" exhaust on mine, and the only place it doesn't fit is over the rear axle.

Alex,

I know it will fit over the steering rack, however, if it means I can get a better angle by modifying the tunnel slightly, I don`t mind doing that. I`m just covering all the angles really  ;)

I thought it`d be tight over the axle. I`ll probably cut out part of the floor and weld a `box` on the inside of the car to give me more clearance  :)
