Title: Final drive
Post by: Stooza on October 18, 2012, 03:56:25 pm
Ok, I have been offered the chance of a final drive from a 1.6 golf gti. Is this a good mod for a track day 16v? To be more specific, will it keep it on the boil on tracks without mega straights?

That's a 3.9 final right?

I switched the 3.6 for a 3.9 in my 2y box, did worked well on a short track and second gear corners.

It depends on the type of track.

I personally preferred a 3.67 in my 16v around Castle Combe, but for somewhere slower/road use then a 3.9 certainly keeps them on the boil better

Id go 3.9 Stu.

Punch the ratios into a gear ratio chart...there's a few floating around on the net.

Std Gti ratios are 3.45, 2.12, 1.44, 1.13 & 0.91 and 0.91 if its a 16v box...0.89 if its 8v.

Pop in yr tyre size and max rpm and see what you get...look for around 35 in 1st, 60 2nd, 80 3rd, 105 4th 115-120 5th.

Stu,

IIRC another thing you need to be aware of is that the FD on an 8v and 16v box is not interchangable as the diff is a different dia 109mm vs 111mm, the input shafts are also a different dia.

Sounds good- ive heard the 8v boxes are tougher than the 16v's (a friend with a very rapid track 16v runs an 8v box with 3.9fd & quaife & swears by it)

I have killed 1 2y box purely from going to a 2L block from a KR :'(
