@tim , yes , we did indeed . He didn't think the phenolic gasket would do a lot , strange IMo , I thought they were a good idea.

LOL now that sounds about right for Guy...if he hasn't tried it or recommended it then it isn't right  ::)  Guy and I have a bit of history....probably best you never mention my name lol

Back to the topic in hand.....the phenolic gasket is definitely not a bad thing IMO although if the cause of the issue is not heat tranferal from the cylinder head then it'll make no significant difference.

I would initially go back to basics as this is a condition that has suddenly occurred......if still running a dizzy check ign timing as from recollection the dizzy can work loose and a change in timing (retarded) would certainly cause the symptoms described.

Has anything else been changed before the event?  Plugs for example?  Typically Guy use to spec plugs one grade cooler on his high output engines, using a std grade plug if you have a concern with fuel would also cause some problems in higher ambients.

I have personally never been a huge fan of foam type air filter elements and I know for a fact that Jason isn't either!

Wish I could be of more assistance.

Tim

Have you asked Guy for his suggestions out of interest?

Well I was partially right....my fault was the ECU injector drivers going down, however the cause was that the injectors were the wrong impedance causing the injector drivers to overheat and overload which in turn made them go in to a built in overload protection mode.

Interestingly Karl from Emerald stumbled across this thread and sent me the following message....

'Hi Tim,

I have just stumbled on a post from you on the JMR forum about linking to an Android device.  This must have been from around the time we were half way up the 'ignition freezing' garden path.

As it happens I was trying to find a completely different post for another customer that demonstrated linking the Emerald ECU to an Nexus 7 via a OBD Bluetooth dongle...

The K3/K6 ECU will link to most Apple/Android apps via OBD Bluetooth or WiFi dongles.  The stand out app for the Android is 'Torque' which enables you to drive numerous gauges, datalog ECU info along with GPS & g data from the device and also record videos with gauge overlays.

There is a little mention of it here on the Emerald website (http://www.emeraldm3d.com/articles/oct2012/).
We'll have to do an update with more information soon.

Let me know if you want to update the firmware to enable this option.

Best regards,
Karl'

What do you think, shall I get the upgrade?

So a really quick update...more after the weekend hopefully!

Much to my families dismay I took the racecar on holiday with me down to Devon so that I could take it the extra 50miles down to Cornwall to see Jason and Alvin to get the new injectors fitted and get it re-mapped to suit.  While doing the new map Alvin said the car still didn't feel quite right....it turns out that the HT leads I had made for the car were arcing out to the head and inlet, as soon as these were changed everything was fine.....I have now ordered a set of custom Magnecor leads but unfortunately these aren't going to be ready for this weekends racing at Snetterton, so I will be using a borrowed set of leads to get me out of trouble  ;)

With 11 Class A cars and 20 Class B cars out this weekend the grid is going to be pretty full, but I am quietly confident that as the car is now performing as it should I will be able to get in to the top 1/3 of the field during qualy  8)

This weekend will be very much a learning curve for me as it'll be the first time the car has been performing to it's full power potential.....just hope I am able to stay on the grey stuff and do it justice.....looking forward to finishing somewhere else other than last  :-[

Unfortunately I was still plagued by the misfire at Cadwell, however the good news is that thanks to the amazing technical backup from Karl at Emerald we have now found the cause of my woes  8)

And my initial thoughts of an ECU issue was kind of correct.....although the true cause is the injectors are the wrong impedance which is causing the ECU to go in to overload protection which is what is causing the misfire.  And the worst bit is that it is all my fault as I sourced the injectors based on their flow rate and didn't even think about impedance!  ::)

Well according to Emerald there was nothing wrong with the ECU, they tested it and returned it with no charge whatsoever.....hmm

So ECU refitted and now all I've got to do is see if there's any difference.....we shall see on Thurs as I'm doing an evening trackday at Cadwell in preparation for racing there on Saturday.

Gave the car a checkover today and bled the brakes as I was getting a bit of a spongy pedal....got some air out of the rear circuit and all's good now.

Made a start on fitting my single wiped conversion.....so here's a question for you all....Should I have the park position straight up in the centre of the screen or off to drivers or passengers side??  What do you guys think?

I have heard it rumoured my issue is not an unknown one to Emerald ECUs......so hopefully it will be an easy fix  ::)

My DTA was a bit of a pain in the beginning. I had one of the very first S40s, and it had to go back a couple of times. It's rock solid now though.
It's even survived 4 years just lying on my shelf in the the office!  :D

Interesting....what problems did you have out of interest?  My Emerald is having issues with the Ign map....it keeps 'freezing' at random advance figures, which is what is causing my misfire.

If I keep having issues with my Emerald I may have to consider swapping to a different ECU....DTA seems a sensible option?

I hear a rumour it's sorted - ECU in the end?

Well I wouldn't say sorted......but yes we know what is causing the issue and yep it's ECU related  :(

Looking good Tom, something like this may have helped me find the issue with my ECU a little quicker assuming you can read ignition advance?  ;)

I wish I knew about code like this as would love to do this to use with my Emerald ECU!  ::)

Top work guys  8)
