From my experience while testing a couple of different air metering heads back to back, it is not just the amount of air the metering head will flow but more importantly, in my opinion, the shape of the cone which controls the amount the flap opens for a given airflow and hence the amount of fuel delivered.  ;)

hi .
i try it one ,and it's pretty interessting how it's made.

the difference about a oe"black head" :

The first difference is that in manufacturing.
the head is aluminum, separate by a flexible sole (nitrile?)
then gives the slots on each injector output are increased.

and the last improvement is driven by vwms disk tray probe that even under him, a curved drive to improve the air passage.

Hi Tim.
Have you published your findings?  I would find them of academic interest as  there is no way I would consider changing the shape of a cone in this as one assumes that the shape was developed to suit the progression requirements for the VWMS Mk2 engines!
The K-Jet Manual has quite a good basic description of what the cone does and of how its shape determines progression.

Herewith photo and dimensions:

Note the extra step in the cone.

Hi Dave,

I don't doubt that the VWMS item is without question the best for a specific engine.  I did some back to back comparing a standard 1.8 8v air metering head vs. a 1.6 8v air metering head as was fabled to have been used by the Slick 50 boys back in the day.  The base engine for this was a 1.9 8v running a Pack C/Stage 3 head...I will dig out the comparative data and post it over the weekend  ;)

Is the disc bigger Dave or the area's either side?

I tried a 1600 metering head on an 1800 slick 50 type spec engine, but unlike Tim's I couldn't get it to work...swapping back to the 1800 metering head gave a better result/richer mixture...but like all tuning, what work's on one spec wont always work on another.

As a side note, even with the warm up reg adjusted (16v unit on an 8v) so the control pressure was backed right off to a couple of bar, we still couldn't get the mixture ideally rich enough....thank god for DCOE's!

ces....have you used a motorsport metering head?...any comparison's available V's a std metering head?

The disc is the same size Jason.
I have not stripped the unit as yet, but I assume that the fuel metering system has different size slots, etc., to give the correct fuel ratio during progression and at full throttle when the air metering can flow some 50% more air!?
As I am in no position at the moment to do anything meaningful with the metering head would you like to borrow it?
You would have to pay for the courier, and they are uber expensive in Eire!
Dave.

hi jason .
I had the opportunity to try one, but it had been badly stored and therefore a little butcher so hard to evaluate.
I try to adjust at best, and I know that the flow rates are increasing and the progress of a flow is faster.
in the catalog of adjustment of the flow rates golf 2 16s (if I remember correctly) are in the 255 ml min.
and I get a 260 ml above with a good injector (volvo turbo, bmv etc)

So according to the head can surely use following an engine power enough elevate.
stole my experience

pity I did not keep the photo tray to show the form
