Gear box
« on: September 27, 2013, 09:49:12 pm »
Hey y'all!

Right, after experiencing some difficult shifting, and it not wanting to go into 1st or second I have come to the conclusion that the clutch is biffed and there is a good chance I have caused some box damage.

I have played around with the linkage to try and see if it had come out of adjustment but it hasn't. I can get it into first for the first shift of the day and with the engine off but it really won't go in the rest of the time, not even on down shift. 3,4 and 5 are sweet. Get a nice jolt to the car when selecting reverse.

Clutch doesn't slip.

Any ideas people? It's a 5 speed o2o box.

Any one got a spare box laying around? Preferably with a LSD fitted!

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

It could be worn syncros or maybe worn linkage? Hopefully the latter! Does it crunch, grind or give resistance when going into any gear?

Hi

No crunch but lots of resistance going into 1st and 2nd. Like it won't go in levels of resistance!

I would look hard at the linkage first, take the gear boot off and make sure the lever is not hitting the stop when going into 1st and 2nd.

Try pushing down on the gear lever when selecting 1st, does this make a difference?

We checked the linkage over the other night and all looks and feels right. It does help if you push the gear stick down as if you were going for reverse, I say it does, it used to. Now it doesn't want to know anything over that side of the box. Apart from reverse.

On the hunt for a new box and clutch now!

Any joy with this?

The ball at the base of the stick can wear, so pushing down on it may help in selecting?

Right,

I have fitted a new clutch and box which turned out to be an 8v box, was very excited to drive it home (which I did) but without the use of 1st. It still doesn't want to know. A bit of resistance getting 2nd to pull away in and the shift into all other gears is lovely and smooth. It doesn't want 1st even on  a down shift.
It's had new clutch cable, clutch and a recently reconditioned box so I have concluded that it must be a linkage issue.
So any advice on linkage set up would be greatly appreciated please. And tools that can help?

Heeeeeellllllpppppp meeeeee!

Did you follow my advice above? If so what was the outcome?

If it's a mk2 I might have a spare alignment tool kicking about that you can to help setup the linkage.  :)

Yea, tried pushing down on it but didn't help getting first al all. Finds reverse fine tho. Think I could do with a new gate. I have a new ball and linkage rebuild kit to fit. The set up tool would be greatly appreciated bud, or even a picture with dimensions and I'll make one.

Received the tools today bud, many thanks, pm me your address and I'll pop em back in the post when I'm done. Shouldn't be long, got the linkage all apart this morning and the rebuild kit turned up today, all going well it should be back together and fingers crossed working tomorrow.

I shall report of my findings.
