Hello and welcome!

Apologies for the looooooong delay!

I've got just such an animal in my collection too...a MK2 that is...a nice 130-140hp road spec would perk it up in 1800 to 2ltr form.

Feel free to pop up any pics of your cars.

INDUCTION / Re: Mk 1 16 valve kr on carbs
« on: November 19, 2015, 03:09:25 am »
It depends on how you view it...

Any performance part will only help make more power where there is a restriction in the part it's replacing. In terms of a std KR, kjet does a decent job in terms of fuel and air supply. On a non injection car it's often easier to fit carbs than plumb in a fuel K system from old parts of unknown history, plus a power gain is possible if used with the right / high flow inlet manifold...expect power to be around 150hp with 40's and a decent exhaust.

Looking good. I guess your opening the chamber a bit in the head and running sensible boost?

I'd still run a mild head, nice road cams and enjoy a sub 180hp of atmo power if it was mine...in fact I'm doing just that on a new project.

More car pics please. . 8)

ENGINES / Re: Can you run a hydraulic cam with mech lifters?
« on: January 01, 2015, 09:04:20 pm »
A hydro profile has a different ramp rate so as not to hammer the hydraulics. .so when used with solid lifters that clearance needs taking up.

However the profile itself will still be soft in operation compared to a dedicated solid lifter profile.

Personally I'd move on any hydro cams and put the funds toward some dedicated solid lifter profiles...the "drive" and  response will be much better. .along the lines I mentioned in the other thread re the 8v V's 16v response.

Ideal...K&N's are spot on.

Rad location still ideally needs moving...especially with a longer manifold. .sounds like you have both those covered. I was going to get a copy of my alloy 16v manifold made in steel as a test unit for you to try back to back on the rollers...but your already on it! Trumpet length requirements are likely to change. .short trumpets with a long manifold. .worth grabbing a set to try as well at manifold swap time.

My thoughts also re the 8 V's 16v engine. .or any come to that...even if the power is similar,  an engine with a hot cam draws harder and gives a deeper grunty feel you don't get with a soft cam engine.

I've never done it myself but I'm told shimming them up real tight. .3-4 thou...is the way to do it.

That's a decent result Jon..and something to build on.

Interesting you say about the feel. .I've yet to drive a 16v that feels like it wants to rip yr arms off...even in a mk1. .ive driven a customers 2ltr with 190hp and 150 ibft...and the 1800 8v hillclimb engines will murder them with the same hp yet worse torque. .both cars stripped sub 750 kilos.

I did notice in your engine bay pics you have a short inlet manifold that kicks up...I have a plan for you... ;)

Also...radiator close to carbs?...the carbs need a clear path with no chance of drawing warm air in.

Also...did you run with filters?...direct air being forced in at speed upsets the signal through the vents and buggers up the fuelling. You wont notice the last bit on a dyno..only on the test track
